The Sunday Times have published their annual Best 25 Big Companies to Work For list, which commends UK workplaces for exceptional workplace engagement.
The list ranks companies based on the views and opinions of their employees, who are surveyed about their experience of their workplace environment, leadership, development opportunities, wellbeing, pay, benefits and a company’s commitment to ‘giving something back’.
To join the list, your organisation must employ at least 3,000 full-time employees and achieve one of the 25 highest BCI scores in the category. To see if your company is included click here.

Following a robust assessment process, CBRE UK Ltd has been awarded the National Equality Standard (NES). CBRE is the first property services provider to achieve this accolade and the 22nd UK company overall.
The UK National Equality Standard was developed by business for business and sets clear equality, diversity and inclusion criteria against which companies are independently assessed. It is supported by EY, the Home Office and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was involved in its development and launch and the standard is now utilised globally.
The NES assessment reviewed CBRE against 49 separate competencies focused on key topics such as; governance, culture, HR policies and processes, business planning, inclusivity, flexible working, leadership commitment and accountability, data as well as external relationships with CSR activities and the firm’s supply chain.

Serco Group saw both profits and revenue fall in 2017 but expects earnings to rise both this year and in 2019.
Revenue was down two per cent from £3 billion in 2016 to £2.95bn with operating profit slipping from £42.2 million to £30m.
Order intake was up 36 per cent at £3.4bn including the Grafton prison in Australia which is the group's largest ever contract win, and over 30 other contract awards worth more than £10m each across the UK, Europe, America and the Middle East. 

Fund Management specialists Bridges has announced an investment of £8.5m to take a majority stake in school catering business Innovate Services. Last year, Bridges also bought a majority stake in Just Ask, a facilities management business that specialises in working with housing associations.

BSRIA announced the appointment of Peter Tse MEng, CEng, MCIBSE, MIET, PE, as Business Manager, Sustainable Construction Group, BSRIA, effective from today. Peter will be well known within the industry as he was previously Principal Consultant within BSRIA’s Sustainable Construction Group for eight years.
Peter has had an extensive and distinguished career at BSRIA in the construction and built environment sector with particular interest in building performance evaluation, energy management, renewable technologies, asset management and policy strategy.
He is also an expert in life cycle costing, condition surveys and electrical infrastructure.
Prior to this Peter worked at Ballinger in Philadelphia as a Electrical Engineer, delivering a variety new and renovation projects in healthcare, offices and education sector. 

We hear environmental consultancy and contract manager, Helistrat, has plans for the international expansion of the business.The move will enable Helistrat to extend its sustainability consultancy and ongoing contract management services to existing ‘blue chip’ clients with international operations, as well as opening up new opportunities with businesses who are either not based, or have a significant proportion of their business, located outside of the UK.
The first phase of the expansion will see Helistrat align themselves with partners who emulate the company’s own values, ambitions and skills.  The result will be a network of resources deployed in Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland, the Middle East, the Americas, Southeast Asia and China.  Once these are successfully established, a review will be undertaken ahead of further expansion later in 2018.
The Helistrat global service is managed centrally from the UK, to ensure a consistent approach to processes and procedures, and to deliver the agreed outcomes in a standardised format. The global reach with a local touch, delivers a uniform methodology and reporting structure that is supported by a coherent project management plan. Where partnership associations are required, these will be overseen by Helistrat and provided with any relevant support or guidance to project conclusion.

Sodexo has been awarded a contract worth €1 million a year from Trinity College Dublin, the highest ranked university in Ireland, according to the QS World University rankings for 2018.
With over 17,000 students, the university has a distinguished reputation for teaching and research excellence.
Sodexo’s contract includes a complete refurbishment of the Arts Building café, introducing a bespoke café concept – The Perch – which will refocus and refresh the space, putting in a new selection of new food offers and providing new seating to increase capacity.
Sodexo will aim to make the space work harder, so that it becomes a social hub for students on campus and will work closely with local suppliers to offer food that is fresh, tasty and ethically-sourced, whilst still competitively-priced.

The Indian facilities management industry is estimated to grow 17 per cent to cross $19 billion mark over the next five years, according to Global Infrastructure Facilities and Project Managers Association.

Great news that BGIS has been able to secure upwards of 2500 jobs in the UK! These jobs were at jeopardy due to the catastrophic failure of Carillion.
BGIS, a global real estate and facility management services provider, announced that it has entered into an agreement with the Special Manager for the Official Receiver to acquire a large portfolio of Carillion facility management contracts in the United Kingdom.
Under the terms of the transaction, BGIS will acquire a portfolio of UK contracts for the delivery of services in the hospital, education, justice, transport and emergency services markets. The transaction is subject to closing conditions, and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018.
With this acquisition, BGIS continues to execute on its strategy of creating a global technically-focused real estate and facilities management services provider.

Capita, which shocked the City with a massive profit warning last week, has drafted in Lazard in recent days to advise on financing options.
The move comes just days after Capita's new chief executive put another set of financiers on standby to raise ‎£700m from a rights issue, which would involves the sale of new shares to investors.
Its decision to bring in Lazard is in one sense curious because the company has stressed that it does not bear comparison with the Carillion postition.

Interserve has presented a rescue plan to banks in an attempt to secure fresh funding, with fears over its future raised by the demise of rival contractor Carillion. Interserve, which cleans the London Underground and manages the Ministry of Defence’s estate in the UK, has already warned on profits and delayed a test on its banking debt covenants until the end of March. It has secured £180m of additional short-term funding until then. Read more here.

Premier Inn has launched an investigation into unsavoury cleaning practices that are alleged to have been undertaken by housekeepers supplied by facilities management company ISS.
In an episode of Channel 4’s Dispatches a housekeeper at Premier Inn London Bridge, in Borough High Street, was seen using the same dirty towel, discarded by a guest, to clean the entire bathroom, including the sink, bath and toilet.
The programme, made by independent production company Tigerlily, also claimed that staff were expected to work additional, unpaid hours in order the meet cleaning targets and had to sign a document saying that they had taken a 30-minute break, even if they had been unable to do so due to an excessive workload. JLL has been ranked the number one real estate investment advisory firm in the UK in 2017, according to recently released independent data from CoStar.
Throughout 2017 close to £60bn of commercial real estate assets were traded in the UK. JLL's capital markets team advised on £14.2bn of transactions, accounting for 20% market share.
JLL achieved a number of landmark transactions throughout the year in a variety of sectors from industrial to retail and alternatives. JLL became the leading investment advisor in the business park market advising on approximately 90% of all UK business park transactions across the UK totalling over £1.45bn.
With investors continually seeking new ways to access property investments, the UK alternatives sector accounted for 26% of the total UK investment market in 2017, at £15.7bn. JLL transacted 32% of alternatives transactions, acting on 50% of the deals in the UK Student Housing market throughout the year, increasing the total proportion of the alternatives market on which it advised significantly in 2017.

A new report from Philips Lighting and SmartCitiesWorld polled 150 city planning experts to find out which city will lead the global smart city transition. Naming Singapore, London and Barcelona as the world’s best smart cities, it reveals that visionary leadership is the factor that would make the biggest difference to the success of smart city programs, cited by 56% of respondents. Salisbury Group has secured an important agreement with Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC). The contract includes the provision of mechanical and electrical planned and reactive maintenance services to all Council sites and facilities across the Vale.
The three-year contract marks Salisbury Group’s entry into the local government sector. It will see the company apply its central government expertise and multi-site, mobile engineering capabilities to support AVDC in achieving its strategic goals. The Council has the option to extend the contract by a further two years.
Salisbury Group won a competitive tendering exercise and its submission was praised for its high quality solution and its focus on the importance of delivering value across a range of areas, as well as its cost effectiveness. The two organisations are now working closely together to mobilise the contract, with services due to commence on 1 April 2018.

Workplace specialists and relocation firm, Active, has been awarded ‘SME of the Year’ at the prestigious Thames Valley Business and Community Awards.
The ceremony saw over 250 business professionals attend the McDonald Berystede Hotel in Ascot to celebrate and acknowledge some of the greatest achievements in the Thames Valley area over the past year.
Active was awarded the illustrious title of ‘SME of the Year’ at the event; commemorating their dedication to efficient and successful relocation and workplace interior design services, both across the country and particularly in the local area.

Bigchange announced Andrew Scully has been promoted to become the new Managing Director. Andrew is a shareholder and founder member of the BigChange team. Earlier this year Mike Buck was appointed as Operations Director. These appointments have been made to help support growth as the company anticipate the business will have revenues of over £50m and employ 150 people by 2022.
