With a Little Help from Our Friends

Mitie has worked with supply partners to provide free refurbishment to The Base at the Two Saints learning centre in Newbury. With donations from Johnstone’s Paint, Rixonway Kitchens and Altro Flooring, Mitie carried out internal redecoration, installed new flooring and built a new kitchen.

The refurbishments helped generate the space needed to create a modern environment, encouraging clients to participate in activities aimed at helping them to return to employment and independent living.

The Base, which is run by Two Saints the charity that supports homeless people across Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxford and West Sussex, will be used for a variety of positive activities, including employability workshops, CV writing sessions, mock interviews, literacy and numeracy skills, basic IT skills and other trade essential tests such as the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, which are all directed at encouraging participants back into employment.

Dean Higgins, Learning and Enterprise Manager of Two Saints, said: “It’s an amazing transformation and it simply wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of the businesses involved.”

O&G pursues growth with Indian backing

Office & General (O&G) has revealed that it is now a part of the Tenon Group of companies, an integrated facilities management corporation based in India with more than 42,000 employees in operations across six countries in Asia and Europe.

Tim Hancock, chief executive of O&G since 2013, remains the leader of the business in the UK. Grae Scott and Jonathan Smith, the founders of the original business, sold their interests to Tenon and its holding company, the AIM listed Mortice plc, in an agreement reached during the summer of 2015.

Manjit Rajain, founder of Tenon in 1995 and the executive chairman of Mortice will be working closely with Tim Hancock as they seek to grow O&G’s facilities management operations – offering the complete range of hard and soft services including security, which has been at the heart of the success of Tenon.

Tenon established itself with manned guarding, moving into facilities management and now providing a range of services, including mechanical and electrical support, to multinational customers across Asia. Tenon had been seeking to expand into the UK for 18-months prior to agreeing the deal with O&G.

PTSG Buys JW Gray Lightning Protection

Fire prevention and security for emergency care hospital

SPIE Scotshield has completed the installation of a new fire and security system at the Cramlington Hospital, a new specialist emergency care centre in Northumbria. The contract is worth in excess of £1m. SPIE was subcontracted by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services to work on the project. Within the wider M&E development, SPIE Scotshield has been responsible for the installation of an L1 category (a fire category that defines what coverage a building needs as guided by the British Standard and end user’s insurance) fire alarm solution. The technology includes a full graphics system and front-end capability to allow staff to use a PC-based alarm system. Additionally, SPIE installed 10 networked fire alarm panels and an access control system with over 400 doors linked to the fire alarm, as well as automatic doors and intercoms.

In order to strengthen security 14 video intercom systems have been installed at ward entrances and intruder alarms placed strategically in seven areas of the site. CCTV 193 Ip cameras have been fitted along with 3 servers and a video wall, based in security, for enhanced control.
