Toxic Charge Hits Older Vehicles

Sadiq Khan has launched a £10 toxicity ‘T-Charge’ (Toxicity Charge) aimed at older, more polluting vehicles on London roads.

The T Charge, which went into force on 23 October 2017, applies mainly to diesel and petrol vehicles registered before 2006 but includes later models too.

The 'T-Charge' will operate on top of (and during the same operating times as) the Congestion Charge (Monday to Friday 7am-6pm), so it will cost £21.50 to drive in the zone if a vehicle is affected.

In the run-up to its launch, Sadiq has said: "It’s staggering that we live in a city where the air is so toxic that many of our children are growing up with lung problems... Londoners overwhelmingly supported my plans to introduce this £10 charge."

Why introduce the Charge?

Air pollution in London is a public health crisis and the Mayor is taking hard-hitting action to tackle it head on.

Thousands of Londoners die prematurely each year as a result of long-term exposure to air pollution – while 438 schools in the capital are in areas exceeding legal air quality levels, it is claimed.

Over 15,000 Londoners took part in the Clean Air consultation on Talk London last year, and there was strong support for the proposal of an emissions surcharge, the Mayor's Office claims.

Cleaner Vehicle Checker

To help motorists choose less-polluting vehicles when they want to buy a new car or van, the Mayor launched a Cleaner Vehicle Checker in October 2017.

The first part of this online tool offers motorists independently-tested emissions data for most new (Euro 6) standard cars and vans on sale in the UK.

Checkers for used and fleet vehicles will follow.
