Innovation and Good News - FM Digest Week Ending August 19

Environmental consultancy and contract manager, Helistrat, has successfully completed accreditation as a Living Wage Employer.

The Living Wage is a voluntary scheme designed to ensure that work pays and affords people the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families.  In contrast to the Government’s minimum wage, which is based on median earnings, the Living Wage Foundation rate is calculated according to the cost of living.

The accreditation means that all of Helistrat’s employees will earn at least £8.25 per hour.  This is a significant improvement on the minimum wage, which is set at £7.20 for those over 25 and just £6.70 for those aged between 21 and 24.

Living Wage Foundation Director, Katherine Chapman said: "The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day's work with a fair day's pay. We have accredited over 2,600 employers. These businesses recognise that clinging to the national minimum wage is not good for business. Customers expect better than that."

 

Vodafone’s FM Journey to World Class - site visit and presentations

BFIM and Vodafone have teamed-up to present Vodafone’s FM Journey to World Class - an opportunity to get a glimpse of the Vodafone FM strategies and also get a tour of the company's campus.  It will take place on Tuesday, October 11 from 5:30-8:30pm at Vodafone HQ - The Connection, Newbury, RG14 2FN.

Michael Ditlbacher, Vodafone Property Customer Experience Director and Rod Hogg, Vodafone Property Senior FM will explain how the Property Team had an effect on customer experience by creating the '1team identity' to form a close partnership between the various facilities services in the buildings.

Jon Hewett, Vodafone Property Catering Lead, will also give a presentation on how Vodafone approached its recent UK catering tender and how this havs contributed towards Building Britain’s Best Workplace.

Mitie helps Scottish Government achieve carbon status

Mitie has helped its client the Scottish Government retain its status as the only government in the world to hold the Carbon Trust Triple Standard. This follows the successful recertification of the three awards which were first gained in 2014.

The Carbon Trust Standards are independent certifications recognising organisations that successfully measure, manage and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste, demonstrating leadership within their industry by making real year-on-year progress.

Grahame Anderson, Facilities Services’ Head of Delivery for the Scottish Government, said: “Mitie are our facilities partner, which means that they maintain the building fabric, manage the heating, and lighting systems in our buildings, as well as managing the collection and treatment of our waste. They have been instrumental in helping us achieve the recertification of the award through their dedicated building management, project delivery, and data gathering on our utility use and waste figures.”

Contract win with London law firm

Imtech Inviron has been awarded a three-year contract with London law firm Mishcon de Reya to undertake planned and reactive maintenance services at the firm's head office in Central London. Responsible for two properties, the on-site team will carry out mechanical and electrical services across Africa House, a 120,000sq.ft Grade II listed building and three floors at Mishcon de Reya's second building in London with a combined floor space of 37,313 square feet.

 

Twig Group branches out

Twig Group based in Goudhurst, Kent, has moved to larger offices to accommodate their proposed growth with improved facilities and expansion potential. Since 2002 when Twig was established, they have built a comprehensive portfolio of clients across the South East and further afield. From complex, ecologically sensitive activities, through to logistically challenging multi site grounds maintenance contracts, Twig Group are now working across 14 separate sites for a major house builder and working with 12 different ecological consultants.

 

BaxterStorey unveils Pokémon menu

BaxterStorey has worked with client ITV Southbank to launch a limited edition Pokémon themed menu. The menu features dishes such as ‘Sourdough Pokéball Pizza’, ‘Jigglypuff Jambalaya’ and ‘Hypno’s Healthy Bar’.

CITV broadcasts the popular television show, 'Pokémon the Series: XYZ' every Saturday at 12pm, which provided the inspiration behind the bespoke menu. Chiv de la Hoyde, Projects Coordinator at ITV, said: “The Workplace Services team at ITV worked closely with the Network Marketing team, BaxterStorey and Special Arts Services, who created the visual elements of the menu. The new dishes have been received extremely well by the many Pokémon Go players here at ITV and it has been great to work with such an enthusiastic team.”

 

New report on disabled passengers’ airport experience recommends more collaboration between FM service providers, airlines and airports to improve quality

A new report, based on the experiences of over 500 passengers, has recommended more collaboration between airlines, airports and service providers in order to improve the quality of assistance to persons with reduced mobility (PRM) at UK airports. The report was commissioned to support the fact-finding phase of a long term improvement programme led by OCS Group to gain a fuller understanding of the disabled passenger needs and address them with an improved level of service provision.

The report found that lack of knowledge among disabled passengers about the advance booking process led to uncertainty, lack of confidence in service provision and customer dissatisfaction. The main passenger uncertainty was confusion over the roles and respective responsibilities of the airline, airport, baggage handler and PRM service provider.  By contrast, frequent flyers who knew how to book and specify the assistance they need reported a higher level of satisfaction with the Passenger Assistance Service.

“It is clear that we need to collaborate more effectively,” commented Steven Wheeler, Customer Services Director for OCS Group. In the next phase of consultation, OCS has organised workshops at airports involving customer groups focused on different disabilities along with all service providers – airlines, airport, PRM providers and baggage handling. The first of the workshops was held at Glasgow Airport in June 2016 and is being followed up with working groups to specify and implement the service improvements. “We commissioned this report to gain a greater understanding of the experiences of disabled travellers and the specific challenges they face at airports. As a result of the findings, we are committed to taking a lead in co-ordinating dispersed services and working with airlines, airports, baggage handlers and other service providers in order to bring the different parties together to provide a seamless and first class service,” said Wheeler. ents based on the recommendations in the report.

 

New Group HR director for OCS

Gordon Headley joined OCS Group on 1st August 2016 in the new role of HR director.
