Cameron Comes to Carillion - Open Government Waits

Prime Minister David Cameron visited Carillion’s Wolverhampton HQ on Thursday 31 October and met with a handful of apprentices currently training...and revealed Carillion had won a £70 million project to upgrade the M6 between J10a and J13.

According to a Carillion Press Statement, the company ‘is the largest single employer of construction apprentices in the UK, training around 10 per cent of the construction sector’s apprentices through a national network of 13 construction training centres located across the country’.

Mr Cameron said: “It’s hugely welcome to see the work that Carillion does. You are doing some inspiring things, such as building new schools and hospitals and are at the forefront with the work you do with apprentices.”

Carillion Chief Executive, Richard Howson, told Cameron and an audience of staff: ''We know that a strong apprenticeship system is key to encouraging economic growth by providing ourselves, our supply chain and the construction sector as a whole, with highly-trained individuals with up to date skills as well as providing an important career path for young people.”

Preventing Tax Fraud

The visit came as something of a break for Cameron having come from the Open Government Partnership Annual Summit where he said a database of company ownership details engineered to expose international money laundering and tax evasion schemes will be made public.

The ‘beneficial ownership register’ will be designed to unravel deliberately opaque ownership structures to help tax authorities track down those who are using low-tax regimes overseas to illegally reduce their tax bills.

The Summit continues today (Friday 1st November).
