£32 Billion For Royal Navy Contracts - Mitie Gets Beeb Gig

The MoD has awarded £3.2 billion of contracts to support the management of the UK's naval bases - about 7,500 jobs will be secured across the UK. The investment is split into fleet maintenance (on the Royal Navy’s fleet of 56 warships and submarines), infrastructure and 'FM'.

Babcock, which manages Her Majesty’s Naval Bases at Devonport and Clyde, has been awarded a £2.6 billion contract, while BAE Systems, which manages Portsmouth Naval Base, has been awarded a £600 million contract. The deal, which brings 5 existing contracts under one framework is expected to make £350 million of savings.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: "Following the £3.5 billion Scout armoured vehicle contract, this is the second biggest defence contract placed by this government and reflects our commitment to giving our armed forces what they need to keep Britain safe. As a former Minister for Portsmouth I know how important naval bases are for the local economies so I am delighted that these contracts have been awarded."

The contract will sustain around 1,500 jobs at Clyde Naval Base and up to 4,000 jobs at Devonport Naval Base for Babcock, and more than 2,000 BAE Systems jobs at Portsmouth.

The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas, said: "These significant contracts represent a strategic investment in the Royal Navy’s essential infrastructure. Without the support provided by each of the 3 naval bases ashore, the ships and submarines of the Royal Navy would not be able to deploy as a credible, strategic and global presence at sea."

Mitie has been awarded a three-year facilities management contract with BBC Worldwide

The contract, with a provision for extension, will see the FM major player deliver a full range of services, including maintenance and repairs, cleaning, catering, security and front of house services at BBC Worldwide’s new offices in Television Centre, White City, London, when the offices open in 2015.

The Television Centre is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment, with the site being redeveloped into a mix of commercial spaces, including a new 100,000ft2 headquarters for BBC Worldwide and private accommodation.

Mitie already has experience in the media sector, with clients including Channel 4, Universal Music and Sky.

“Mitie was chosen as the FM partner for its creative approach, the cultural fit, and its use of technology to improve service delivery,” explained Andreas Arnold, Director, Strategic Projects, BBC Worldwide.

Mitie will provide full FM services to BBC Worldwide when it moves into new offices on the fully refurbished Television Centre site in 2015
